A three dimensional MHD model of the earth's magnetosphereThe results of a global MHD calculation of the steady state solar wind interaction with a dipole magnetic field are presented. The computer code used, being much faster than previous codes, makes it possible to increase the number of grid points in the system by an order of magnitude. The resulting model qualitatively reproduces many of the observed features of the quiet time magnetosphere including the bow shock, magnetopause, and plasma sheet.
