Research in the comprehension of engineering lectures by non-native speakersFailure by foreign students to perceive the rhetorical structure or overall organization of an engineering lecture, rendering them unable to understand it, is discussed. Equally serious failure by such students to perceive the organizing role of theory in structuring the activities in their field is reported. Failure to identify the role of theory in the problem-solving process that underlies engineering is emphasized. Engineering was not seen as a series of on-going problems where each stage of solution exposed new problems to be solved. Implications for course planners and material designers are discussed.
