The influence of solar ultraviolet variability on climateChanges in the solar u.v. flux and its wavelength distribution could affect the climate both directly and through the greenhouse effect of the ozone shield. Indeed, the ozone content of the stratosphere is highly sensitive to the relative intensity of two broad spectral regions in the solar u.v. The observed amplitude for global-ozone variation of a few percent at most over the solar cycle is compatible with a variation of solar u.v. flux of no more than about 20%.
