Evidence for extended chromospheres surrounding red giant starsThere is now an increasing amount of both observational evidence and theoretical arguments that regions of partially ionized hydrogen extending several stellar radii are an important feature of red giant and supergiant stars. This evidence is discussed and the implications of the existence of extended chromospheres in terms of the nature of the outer atmospheres of, and mass loss from, cool stars are examined.
