The application and results of a new flight test techniqueThe application of a flight test maneuver auto-pilot test technique for collecting aerodynamic and structural flight research data on a highly maneuverable aircraft is described. This newly developed flight test technique was applied at the Dryden Flight Research Facility of the NASA Ames Research Center on the highly maneuverable aircraft technology (HiMAT) vehicle. A primary flight experiment was done to verify the design techniques used to develop the HiMAT aerodynamics and structures. This required the collection of large quantities of high-quality pressure distribution, loads, and deflection data. The effectiveness of the flight test technique is illustrated with a flight test example comparing various pressure distribution measurements.
