Spaceborne Gravity Gradiometers. Part 3: Instrument status and prospectsVarious technologies incorporated in the development of gravity gradiometers are demonstrated through descriptions of specific instruments. Concepts covered include: rotating, spherical, cryogenic, and superconducting gravity gradiometers with and without accelerometers. The application of superconducting cavity oscillators to mass-spring gradiometers, and cooperation of Italy's Piano Spaziale Nazionale with the Smithsonian Astrophysics Observatory in the design and development of a high sensitivity gradiometer are described. Schematics are provided for each instrument.
