Osteocalcin as an indicator of bone metabolism during spaceflightThe effect of microgravity on osteocalcin (OC) is investigated in rats flown on Spacelab 3. Serum, Ca, Pi, total protein, alkaline phosphatase, and OC contents, and the breaking strength of the humerus of control and Spacelab rats are calculated; the procedures utilized for these analyses are described. It is detected that the OC is reduced, and the serum and alkaline phosphatase are unaffected by microgravity.
