Study of an all SFHE SIRTF cryogenic systemThe Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) is a superfluid helium cooled, 85-cm telescope with three infrared instruments at the focal plane. SIRTF will establish in space a long-term-maintainable infrared observatory for the region of 2-700 microns. The cryogenic system can be designed to last up to six years with 1280 kg of superfluid, and can function in either a 28.5 deg or 98 deg inclination orbit by exchanging the sunshade. The lifetime is primarily a function of instrument heat load rather than parasitic heat to the cryogen system.
