Formation of nuclei during precipitation in metallic mixed crystalsAssuming that the energy of a mixed crystal can be calculated by simple addition of neighboring bonds, the nuclear formation energy is calculated for precipation in a super-saturated binary mixed crystal. From this can be determined the frequency of the formation of nuclei. From the calculation of a numerical example we can obtain, for the degree of sub-cooling at which the frequency of the formation of nuclei reaches its maximum, satisfactory agreement with available measurements of the rate of precipitation.
