Auger electron spectroscopy of contrast-forming layers on metalsAs shown by Auger electron spectroscopy, the layers formed during contrasting metallographic polished Cu and Ni with an apparatus using intense electron bombardment consist of metal sputtered from the Au, Fe, or Pb cathode. This layer takes up oxygen from the residual atmosphere. The mechanism of contrast enhancement is the same as that of vapor-deposited interference layers.
