New handling-qualities requirements and how they can be metThe structure and coverage of the proposed MIL-H-8501B specification for helicopter handling qualities are reviewed. The specification prescibes the desired vehicle command response as a function of the mission task and the usable visual cues. It takes into account failures and flight envelopes, and it prescribes a set of flight demonstration maneuvers. Helicopter performance requirements with degraded visual cues are proposed, in addition to specific longitudinal and lateral dynamics requirements.
