Traveling waves in large-aspect-ratio thermosolutal convectionNumerical simulations of two-dimensional thermosolutal convection in a long box of aspect ratio d = 16, with free but impenetrable boundaries, reveal solutions in the form of traveling, standing, and modulated waves. These nonlinear solutions are closely related to the theoretical predictions for an unbounded layer. An unexpected feature is that the traveling waves reverse their direction of propagation in an episodic manner; this is not the case for the modulated waves. The calculations are related to recent experiments on convection in binary fluid mixtures.
