Effects Of Twist On Ceramic ThreadsReport describes study of effects of yarn twist and other manufacturing parameters on strength of ceramic sewing threads. Three types of thread considered; silica, aluminoborosilicate (ABS) with 14 percent boria, and ABS with 2 percent boria. For silica thread, best twist found 300 turns per meter. Produced highest break strength at temperatures up to about 540 degree C. Overall strengths of both ABS threads higher than silica thread. Threads used to stitch insulating blankets for reusable spacraft; must resist high temperatures and high aerodynamic loads of reentry into atmosphere of Earth.
