Fuzzy sets and autonomous navigationThe use of fuzzy sets in modeling the human expert for certain Space Shuttle navigation problems is discussed with particular reference to onboard and ground console data monitoring tasks traditionally performed by astronauts and engineers. Specific problems include determining the quality of sensor data and of the filter state. The results obtained in this study indicate that fuzzy sets can be successfully used in modeling human reaction to rules in decision-making processes. They can also be used within software systems where guidelines have traditionally been used to set strict tolerances.
