Nimbus-7 earth radiation budget measurements and their relationship to the energetics of the general circulationObservations from the Nimbus-7 Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) experiment were used to examine the way in which changes in equator to pole energy gradients effect Northern Hemisphere midlatitude energetics. The results of kinetic energy calculations describing the midlatitude circulation are compared to the gradients of IR flux and NET radiation. A close relationship is found between the ERB gradient values and kinetic energy values. It is shown that the zonal wind speed and the eddy winds increase as the temperature gradient increases.
