Bidirectional canopy reflectance and its relationship to vegetation characteristicsA method for determining the relationship between bidirectional canopy reflectance (CR) of a vegetated area and its characteristics (type and growth stage) is presented. In the method, the three-dimensional CR surface is expressed in terms of spherical harmonics which are weighted by appropriate coefficients, and the coefficients are analyzed by a cluster technique. The method is applied to four vegetation types (soybeans, corn, shinnery oak, and orchard grass) at various stages of growth.
