Failure of a laminated composite under tension-compression fatigue loadingThe fatigue behavior of composite laminates under tension-compression loading is analyzed and compared with behavior under tension-tension and compression-compression loading. It is shown that for meaningful fatigue conditions, the tension-compression case is the dominant one. Both tension and compression failure modes can occur under the reversed loading, and failure is dependent on the specific lay-up of the laminate and the difference between the tensile static strength and the absolute value of the compressive static strength. The use of a fatigue failure envelope for determining the fatigue life and mode of failure is proposed and demonstrated.
