An aeronomy mission to investigate the entry and orbiter environment of MarsThe need for an aeronomy mission to Mars as a precursor to a manned Mars mission is discussed. The upper atmosphere and radiation environment of Mars are reviewed, focusing on the implications of the Martian atmosphere for a manned mission. Plans for an aeronomy mission to Mars are described, including the Mars Aeronomy Observer and the Earth/Mars Aeronomy Orbiter.
