Development of the Rocket Extraction Escape System for the Space ShuttleSix tests have been successfully conducted for a Space Shuttle Rocket Extraction Escape System (REES) for astronauts, using a modified Convair 240 aircraft with a simulated Shuttle Orbiter hatch. All escape trajectories are judged to have been able to clear the Orbiter by an acceptable margin, and the crew-extraction loads were found to be within accepted physiological tolerances. The REES concept can be applied to numerous other aircraft configurations for crew escape.
