Are periodic bombardments real?Consideration is given to the hypothesis that showers of comets or asteroids strike the earth every 26 m yrs, causing climatic castastrophes and mass extinctions (Raup and Sepkoski, 1984). Possible explanations for the alleged periodicity are discussed, including the possibility that the sun has a small faint companion star and perturbations of the Oort cloud as the solar system passes through the Galactic plane. Also, the possible causes of the extinction at the K-T boundary are examined. The implications of these theories are noted and evidence suggesting that impacts do not have periodicity is presented.
