Tropical precipitation rates during SOP-1, FGGE, estimated from heat and moisture budgetsUsing the NASA Goddard Laboratory analyses collected during the first FGGE Special Observing Period, global estimates of precipitation rates were derived for the domain between 30-deg N to 30-deg S, and the results were compared to OLR patterns and to each other to evaluate their consistency and reliability. Regional averages are presented to examine the variability of rainfall rates among selected regions of the Southern Hemisphere tropics. Finally, precipitable water was computed and compared to results derived from SMMR estimates and to the precipitation patterns. Results show that the heat and moisture budget estimates of precipitation compare favorably. Vertical profiles reveal that maximum convective heating occurs in the middle troposphere. The profile of the South Pacific convergence zone region compares best with profiles obtained over the western North Pacific.
