Cloud model-based simulations of satellite microwave data and their application to an SSM/I rain algorithmSatellite microwave observations of convective rain systems are simulated using a three-dimensional cloud model and a microwave radiative-transfer model. The simulated data sets are then used as a basis to derive rain estimation algorithms which are tested on actual satellite data. A tropical simulation is discussed, and the algorithms are applied to SSM/I data.
