Fracture toughness in SiC/Al composite materialCrack initiation fracture toughness does not depend on SiC particle size. Crack growth fracture toughness increases as the size of the SiC particle increases. The fracture process is confined to a very narrow band and takes place within the matrix. In the case of composite reinforced with SiC particles of 20 microns and above, fracture of SiC begins to dominate. The matrix is influenced by a triaxial tension in the matrix and a high density of dislocations generated at SiC/Al interfaces due to the difference in coefficient of thermal expansion between SiC and the Al matrix.
