Limitations of opto-electronic neural networksConsideration is given to the limitations of implementing neurons, weights, and connections in neural networks for electronics and optics. It is shown that the advantages of each technology are utilized when electronically fabricated neurons are included and a combination of optics and electronics are employed for the weights and connections. The relationship between the types of neural networks being constructed and the choice of technologies to implement the weights and connections is examined.
