Outbursts of H2O in Comet P/HalleyComet Halley gas-production monitoring efforts in March 1986 with the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory's Fourier transform spectrometer have indicated rapid temporal variations in H2O emissions; a continuous record of an H2O outburst was thus obtained. The event, in which H2O brightness increased by a factor of 2.2 in less than 10 min, is ascribable to an energetic process in the nucleus whose character may have been that of amorphous H2O ice crystallization, chemical explosion, thermal stress, or a compressed gas pocket. The timing and energy of the event appear to require an internal energy source; amorphous ice crystallization is held to be most consistent with compositional and thermal models of cometary nuclei as well as the observations.
