Standing shocks in the inner solar windIt has been pointed out by several authors that the equations describing rapidly diverging flow in the solar wind and in related astrophysical systems allow for solutions with standing shocks in the acceleration region of the flow. The range of plasma and flow-geometry parameters that allow for such solutions are investigated. It is shown that, for reasonable geometries, shocks can occur only for a very narrow range of flow parameters in the case of the solar wind. Similar results can be expected for related astrophysical systems.
