Low carbon steel: Metallurgical structure vs. mechanical propertiesThe objective is to provide a low cost, simple experiment for either demonstration purposes or as a laboratory experiment that will teach the student the importance of the thermal-mechanical history of a metallic alloy in determining that material's mechanical behavior. Hairpins are subjected to various treatments. The experimental equipment and procedures are discussed.
