The Kelvin water-drop experimentThis experiment was originally designed and performed by Lord Kelvin (William Thomson) in the late 1800's to demonstrate the creation of an electric potential simply by means of dividing up a body of flowing water. The objective is to demonstrate the power of electrical forces in a material as common as water and to help teach the student that even simple, well understood phenomena sometimes present unexpected results that, at first thought, defeat explanation. The experimental equipment and procedure are explained.
