Satellite measurements of Birkeland currents

Evidence collected via satellite that confirms the presence of field-aligned currents which flow into and away from the auroral and polar regions is reviewed. These observations support the hypotheses of Birkeland and Alfven that these currents play an important role in auroral phenomena. Birkeland's contributions to the study of currents and waves are discussed, and the principal characteristics of Birkland currents are considered. The role of Birkeland currents in the auroral phenomena is examined.
