Eddy damping, backscatter, and subgrid stresses in subgrid modeling of turbulenceThe Brief Report demonstrates the relationship of eddy-viscosity models to subgrid stresses. A formula that determines the relative importance of the cross stress and the Reynolds stress for the net eddy-damping and backscatter contributions is derived. The cross-stress term with sharp-cut filtering is identified as an important quantity to model. These concepts could prove useful as a basis for constructing specific models for the Reynolds and cross stresses.
