In-flight simulation at the NASA Dryden Flight Research FacilityAn account of the in-flight simulation at the Dryden Flight Research Facility is presented and various aircraft and tests performed are discussed. In-flight simulation has been utilized for a variety of flying quality investigations including low-lift-to-drag ratio approach characteristics for vehicles like the X-15, the lifting bodies, and the Space Shuttle. Consideration is given to the effects of time delays on controllability of aircraft with digital flight-control systems, flight control systems for such aircraft as the X-29, and the causes and cures of pilot-induced oscillation in diverse aircraft.
