Off-plane imaging for milli-arcsecond X-ray observatoriesThe development of milliarcsecond imaging in X-ray astronomy is discussed in terms of a concept in which off-plane imaging is utilized to significantly increase spectroscopic and imaging resolution. Grazing incidence optics permit practical improvements of a factor of 10 in X-ray spectrographs, and a similar technique is described for a milliarcsecond X-ray observatory (MAX). MAX requires a very smooth mirror surface, operates at a plate scale that existing detectors cannot support, requires a small collecting area, and has to be designed as a highly stable structure.
