Space Transportation System design for operations in the 2000+ eraHighlights of design studies for the Personnel Launch System (PLS) and the Advanced Manned Launch System (AMLS) are reviewed, and the benefits achieved by the involvement of product development teams (PDTs) in the advanced design environment are considered. The definition of system concept for the PLS and the AMLS and the development philosophy of the systems are addressed, including the adoption of major features of aircraft design, development, and operation, including performance trending, the use of certified airframe and powerplant personnel, lifetime certification, and the operational environment. Design features of the systems are examined.
