Optical transients and depth analysisFlaws of the depth analysis technique of distinguishing photographic plate defects are discussed. The method is shown to be unreliable in confirming or disproving the astrophysical nature of optical transients. The arguments of Greiner and of Zytkow to the contrary are criticized.
