Estimation of tropical precipitation using 19.35 GHz SSM/I dataSpecial Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) data are analyzed using a new direct method to estimate mean monthly precipitation between 50 deg S and 50 deg N. A brief description of the algorithm used is presented along with preliminary results for January and July 1990. The amounts of the precipitation estimates are in good agreement with the mean monthly climatological values.
