Challenges to the successful implementation of 3-D soundThe major challenges for the successful implementation of 3-D audio systems involve minimizing reversals, intracranially heard sound, and localization error for listeners. Designers of 3-D audio systems are faced with additional challenges in data reduction and low-frequency response characteristics. The relationship of the head-related transfer function (HRTF) to these challenges is shown, along with some preliminary psychoacoustic results gathered at NASA-Ames.
