DENIS, 2MASS and VLM starsTo a first approximation, every star is an M dwarf - but there are still considerable gaps in our understanding of these stars, particularly in the space density of the lowest mass stars. Fortunately, the 2 micrometer sky surveys are likely to change this state of affairs. In this paper, I review briefly the likely impact of these surveys.
