Design considerations and strategies for lunar-based observationsThis paper addresses the design considerations and strategies for astrophysical observations as key elements of an international solar system exploration program. Emphasis is placed on the technical and programmatic challenges and opportunities associated with an evolving program of lunar-based astronomy. Both robotic and human tended facilities are discussed ranging from relatively small meter-class transit telescopes to large interferometer and filled-aperture systems.
