On the Effect of Feedback Control on Benard Convection in a Boussinesq FluidThe effect of nonlinear feedback control strategies on the platform of convection in a Boussinesq fluid heated from below is investigated. In the absence of the control, given that non-Boussinesq effects may be neglected, it is well known that convection begins in the form of a supercritical bifurcation to rolls. Non-Boussinesq behaviour destroys the symmetry of the basic state, and through a subcritical bifurcation leads to the formation of hexagonal cells. Here we discuss the influence of regulation of the lower surface temperature by means of a control mechanism, made up of a combination of a proportional linear and nonlinear controller, on the stability of the hexagonal cell pattern.
