Holographic particle image velocimetry measurements in a rectangular jetThe development and testing of a holographic technique capable of measuring the three velocity components in selected regions of the flow field are described. Several techniques, including laser Doppler velocimetry, hot wire and particle image velocimetry (PIV) are commonly used to measure a flow field. The advantage of the PIV technique is that it provides instantaneous measurements in a selected plane of the flow field. The aim is to extend the conventional two dimensional PIV technique to simultaneously record several planes by means of the holographic technique. In the holographic technique, parallel laser sheets are used to increase the intensity of the light in specific planes of the flow field. Particles as small as 5 microns can be recorded.
