The Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST): Science and technologyThe scientific requirements and implications for the instruments and telescope design for the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) are described. A candidate concept is a deployable, 8 m diameter telescope, optimized for the near infrared region, but featuring instruments capable of observing up to 30 micrometers. The observatory is radiatively cooled to approximately 30 K.
