Spectroscopic observations of the extended corona during the SOHO whole sun monthThe spatial distribution of plasma parameters in the extended corona, derived from the ultraviolet coronagraph spectrometer (UVCS) onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), was investigated. The observations were carried out during the SOHO whole month campaign. Daily coronal scans in the H I Lyman alpha and O VI lambda-lambda 1032 A and 1037 A were used. Maps of outflow velocities of O(5+), based on Doppler dimming of the O VI lines, are discussed. The velocity distribution widths of O(5+) are shown to be a clear signature of coronal holes while the velocity distributions for H(0) show a much smaller effect. The possible physical explanations for some of the observed features are discussed.
