Synergetic use of Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) and Moderate Image Spectrometer (MODIS)I shall describe several distinct modes in which AERONET data are used in conjunction with MODIS data to evaluate the global aerosol system and its impact on climate. These includes: 1) Evaluation of the aerosol diurnal cycle not available from MODIS, and the relationship between the aerosol properties derived from MODIS and the daily average of these properties; 2) Climatology of the aerosol size distribution and single scattering albedo. The climatology is used to formulate the assumptions used in the MODIS look up tables used in the inversion of MODIS data; 3) Measurement of the aerosol effect on irradiation of the surface, this is used in conjunction with the MODIS evaluation of the aerosol effect at the TOA; and 4) Assessment of the aerosol baseline on top off which the satellite data are used to find the amount of dust or anthropogenic aerosol.
