EVA Requirements for Exploration EVAsThe exploration program proposed by the President will require extensive extravehicular operations in a wide range of environments. These include Og EVAs in planetary orbits as well as potential contingency EVAs during inter-planetary flight and surface operations on the moon and Mars. The EVA environments and mission requirements are very different for each of these. Commonality among such systems is highly desirable from the programmatic standpoint but the dramatic differences in EVA environments will have a profound impact on EVA system design. This paper will examine the relevant environmental parameters and discuss their impacts on EVA system design. An EVA design philosophy that maximizes EVA system commonality will be discussed.
