Matching Multistage Schemes to Viscous FlowMultistage, explicit time stepping can be tailored to accelerate convergence for scalar advection-diffusion problems by using optimized multistage coefficients that vary with the local cell Reynolds number. And, when combined with local preconditioning, variable-coefficient multistage schemes for computational fluid dynamics codes can also provide an order of magnitude faster convergence, relative to standard, fixed-coefficient schemes, for the Navier-Stokes system of equations.
