Late Holocene Eruptive History of Popocatepetl Volcano, Mexico: Implications for Future HazardsDetailed mapping of the strata around the Popocatepetl Volcano in central Mexico indicates that there have been major eruptions every 1000 to 2000 years. The last two of these destroyed pre- Columbian cities in the area, and a similar level of eruption today might require evacuation of as many as 30 million people.
