Viking Lander: Building a Complex SpacecraftVarious aspects of the design, testing, and preparation of the Viking lander spacecraft for Mars exploration are considered. The mission profile is given, including the entry into the Martian atmosphere and landing on the planet's surface. The return of scientific data to Earth is discussed. The top ten problem areas in the Viking lander project are enumerated, as are project costs. Pre-launch performance tests and preparation procedures are also addressed.
