A mixed formulation for interlaminar stresses in dropped-ply laminatesA structural model is developed for the linear elastic response of structures consisting of multiple layers of varying thickness such as laminated composites containing internal ply drop-offs. The assumption of generalized plane deformation is used to reduce the solution domain to two dimensions while still allowing some out-of-plane deformation. The Hellinger-Reissner variational principle is applied to a layerwise assumed stress distribution with the resulting governing equations solved using finite differences.
