Improving the Derivation of GEO-derived Fluxes in the SYN1deg Product The Clouds and Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) project provides top of atmosphere (TOA) broadband fluxes on time scales relevant for climate studies. CERES releases a suite of products that includes: SSF1deg, SYN1deg, EBAF TOA, and EBAF Surface. The SSF1deg provides TOA shortwave fluxes based on two daytime measurements (one from Aqua and Terra) and assumes constant meteorology to interpolate the hours between observations to compute the daily average. The SYN1deg also provides TOA shortwave fluxes by employing geostationary satellite (GEO) derived fluxes between CERES observations to compute the daily averages. The GEO fluxes are then scaled to the CERES fluxes. EBAF monthly mean fluxes provide these diurnally complete fluxes while mitigating the GEO artifacts as well as constraining the SW and LW fluxes to be in balance with the ocean heat storage. This study will focus on improving the process of converting GEO visible imager channel radiances into SW broadband radiances and fluxes.
