Infrared Reflection Removal in Wind Tunnels Using Polarization TheoryInfrared radiometry with infrared cameras allows for high spatial resolution, noncontact measurements in wind tunnel experiments and has been increasingly used to visualize flow features. Reflections from test section walls present a major challenge in collecting these measurements as it is difficult or impossible to separate them from the true model emission signal. This paper outlines a method to quantitatively remove specular reflections using polarization theory for materials common in the Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel. The method was however ultimately ineffective due to unexpected diffuse reflection and was unable to remove the specular reflection. The experiment provided insight into ways that polarization could be utilized to improve data collection capabilities of optical measurement techniques in wind tunnel settings.
